Feast of the Holy Family, December 28, 2025
Hello and Welcome. Our mass for today is cancelled because of a Blizzard warning here in Fargo. However, I am posting my Homily for the Feast of the Holy Family. Stay safe and warm today. – Fr. Don

On this Feast of the Holy Family, we usually picture peace: Mary, Joseph, and the child Jesus safe at home. But today’s Gospel gives us a different image—one that may feel uncomfortably close to home to people in our community and around our country.

This family is afraid. They flee in the night. They cross borders.
They do not know when—or if—they will return.

The Holy Family knows what it is to live with uncertainty. They have been living peacefully in Bethlehem for quite some time.

Joseph receives a warning in a dream: “Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt.” And Scripture says simply, “Joseph rose.” No hesitation. No conditions. No guarantees. He protects his family the only way he can—by leaving everything familiar behind.

For many families today, this is not ancient history. It is daily reality. Fear of violence. Fear of separation. Fear of what tomorrow may bring. The Gospel does not speak about these realities from a distance. Jesus enters them.

Before Jesus teaches, before he heals, before he preaches mercy, he lives it—by depending on it. He survives because strangers offer safety. The Son of God becomes a refugee. That is not a political statement. It is a Gospel truth. And it means something for us as Catholic Christians.

Holy Family Sunday reminds us that holiness is not about having a perfect life. It is about protecting each other, trusting God, and staying faithful when the future is unclear. Mary and Joseph do not understand the whole plan. They only know the next right step—and they take it.

Many in our community and around the country are living in that same space: taking the next step without knowing what comes next. And today, the Church is called not to add to fear, but to be a place of refuge.

A parish should feel like Egypt did for the Holy Family: a place where families are safe, where dignity is honored, where no one is invisible.

This Gospel also reminds us that God works quietly. God speaks in dreams, in conscience, in compassion. God does not shout through fear. God whispers through love. And when God finally tells Joseph it is safe to return, the family comes back—not to where they expected, but to Nazareth. A small place. An overlooked place. A place with no prestige. That is where Jesus grows. That is where salvation takes root.

Sometimes faith does not bring us back to “normal.” It brings us somewhere new. But God is there too.

So today, on Holy Family Sunday, we ask:

  • Can we trust God when the path is uncertain?
  • Can we open our hearts and protect families instead of judging them?
  • Can our parish be a sign that no family walks alone and we are a place of safety?

The Holy Family teaches us that God is found not only in stability, but in movement; not only in safety, but in trust; not only in answers, but in faithful love. May every family who is afraid hear this Gospel as good news. May every family who feels displaced know that Christ has been there before them. And may we, as a parish family, reflect the mercy that once sheltered the Son of God.  +
